BACKUP

Endpoint backup built into the Outpost agent

Back up files and whole systems with the same agent that monitors and patches them.

Outpost backs up Windows and Linux endpoints to storage you choose, encrypted on the endpoint before anything leaves it. Backup is part of every plan. macOS data-volume images are coming soon with the macOS agent.

WHAT IT BACKS UP

Files and whole systems.

Choose the folders that matter, add a system image, or both, by policy.

  • File-level backups, with include and exclude paths
  • Windows system images, captured block by block
  • Linux whole-system backups, using live LVM and btrfs snapshots where the system has them
  • macOS data-volume images, coming soon with the macOS agent

DESTINATIONS

Your storage, your choice.

Each endpoint keeps a primary copy and, if you want one, a secondary copy somewhere else, each with its own schedule and retention.

  • Your own S3-compatible bucket, such as AWS S3, Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, Wasabi, or MinIO
  • Outpost Cloud Storage
  • A local disk on your Outpost server
  • An SMB network share, for Windows endpoints

The endpoint normally writes straight to your S3-compatible bucket or network share, so backup data does not pass through Outpost on the way.

ENCRYPTION AND INTEGRITY

Encrypted before it leaves.

Backups are encrypted, compressed, and deduplicated on the endpoint.

  • Keys held in escrow by default, so you can browse and restore from the console
  • Optional zero-knowledge mode for each client, where Outpost holds no key
  • Recent backups protected from deletion, with S3 Object Lock where the bucket supports it
  • Scheduled verification runs, and tamper alerts when snapshots go missing

SCHEDULES AND RETENTION

Runs when it should.

Policies decide when backups run and how long they are kept, the same way they manage the rest of the endpoint.

  • Separate schedules for files and system images
  • Retention with hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, and annual copies
  • Skip a run on a metered connection or on battery
  • Upload bandwidth limits, and an optional backup before patching

RESTORE

Get it back.

Browse any snapshot from the console and restore what you need.

  • Restore files and folders to their original location or another folder
  • Restore to another endpoint
  • Download selected files from the console
  • Export a Windows system image as a VHD that boots in a virtual machine
  • A recovery kit for each endpoint, so backups restore with the standard open-source Kopia tool, with no lock-in

THIRD-PARTY BACKUP STATUS

One view of every backup.

The agent detects other backup products on the endpoint and reports their status next to Outpost backups.

  • One coverage view: protected, stale, failed, and unprotected endpoints
  • Alerts when a backup fails or goes stale
  • Detected on the endpoint: Veeam, Windows Server Backup, Macrium, Acronis, Cove, Datto, Backblaze, and CrashPlan
  • Time Machine on macOS, coming soon with the macOS agent

PLANS

On every plan.

Backup is part of every plan. Home Lab backs up to your own S3-compatible storage, a local disk on your Outpost server, or a network share. On the other plans, backups on Outpost Cloud Storage count toward the plan's Outpost Cloud Storage allowance, then bill per GB-month.
